A Future for Craco (Matera, Basilicata)

Symposium

This project is a collection of impressions, images, hypotheses and examples with the goal of imagining a future for this and all the other abandoned towns around the world.

Through a serie of simple tools the presented suggestion aims to bring conceptual solutions to the issue of depopulation of Craco and other towns in the same state. People are the rare goods. The idea is that artists, performers, musicians, sculptors and writers can all benefit by inhabiting such places, finding themselves  absorbed into a basic-function living, while sharing creativity during meals, spare time and celebrations (of life, of death, of beauty, of the frightening etc.). Each studio is generic in its layout and can host any form of artistic practice. It is a new freedom, far away from the speed and sounds of the living cities, rocked by an unchosen silence and the sweet roughness of old, cracked stone buildings.
